The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising individuals not to purchase or use Seroquel XR, a generic version of the brand-name drug XR.
The drug’s patent for Seroquel XR expires in the United States May 2023. This means the drug will sell for generic versions of around $2 per pill. Generic Seroquel XR is available from registered drug and pharmacy retailers in the United States.
The FDA announced a review of the product information provided by the manufacturer.
“We are very pleased with the review and agree with the agency that Seroquel XR is an effective, safe, and reliable treatment for major depressive disorder,” stated FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, Jr, in the FDA announcement.
The review has found that the drug is not effective for treating major depressive disorder, as it does not appear to have a significant risk of causing suicidal thoughts or suicide.
“This review is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to weigh and evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term effects of XR for treating major depressive disorder,” stated Acting FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
Last year, the FDA issued a public advisory about Seroquel XR. The agency’s public advisory panel recommended that the drug be approved for marketing in the United States.
“Our review of the data supports the FDA’s conclusion that XR is not effective, safe, or approved for treating major depressive disorder, as it does not appear to have a significant risk of causing suicidal thoughts or suicide,” stated FDA Chairman Scott Gottlieb Jr. “We also endorse the agency’s conclusion that Seroquel XR is not a useful treatment for major depressive disorder.”

WASHINGTON, D. C. –The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared two new drugs to treat psychosis in children and adults.
In one of the new treatments, Seroquel for children, pediatricians have found that kids can take Seroquel for longer than six months, and adults can take Seroquel for longer than one year.
Seroquel, a brand name for quetiapine fumarate, is now available in pediatric and adult doses.
The new drugs, which include Seroquel and extended release quetiapine fumarate tablets, are among the drugs being tested for pediatric and adult use, the FDA said in a statement Thursday.
A total of 7,500 doses of Seroquel have been tested to treat children with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The FDA has also approved a number of additional drugs to treat manic-depressive illness.
The drugs are indicated for pediatric use and children older than 12 with bipolar disorder are also being studied as potential treatment options.
The FDA has recommended the use of quetiapine fumarate for children for a range of conditions.
Seroquel is the only new drug to be approved for treatment of bipolar disorder.
